How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day of Preschool

A smiling preschool boy in a dinosaur shirt holds up a yellow crayon beside his workbook at the classroom table.

The backpack is ready, the first-day outfit is picked out, and you've probably taken more pictures than you'd like to admit.

It's almost time for your little one's first day of preschool!

For some children, this day is filled with excitement. For others, there might be a few tears, some nervous feelings, and a little hesitation about saying goodbye. And let's be honest, sometimes it's the parents who have the hardest time!

Starting preschool is a big milestone for the whole family. It's the beginning of new friendships, new routines, growing independence, and so many exciting firsts.

The good news? There are a few simple things you can do to help make the transition a little easier.

1. Start Talking About Preschool Before the First Day

One of the best ways to help your child feel comfortable is to talk about what preschool will be like before they actually start.

Keep the conversations positive and simple.

Talk about the fun things they'll get to do, like painting pictures, playing with toys, reading stories, singing songs, and making new friends.

You might say something like:

"You're going to have so much fun at preschool! You'll get to play with other kids, make art, and learn all kinds of new things. And I'll be back to pick you up when your school day is over."

The more familiar the idea becomes, the less overwhelming that first day may feel.

2. Practice Your Morning Routine

Preschool mornings can feel a little hectic, especially when everyone is trying to get out the door on time!

A week or two before preschool starts, begin practicing your new morning routine.

Try waking up around the same time, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and gathering everything you'll need for the day.

You can even make it fun by letting your child help pack their backpack or pick out their clothes.

Having a predictable routine can help children feel more confident because they know what to expect.

And if the first few mornings don't go exactly as planned? That's okay too!

3. Encourage a Little Independence

Preschool is full of opportunities for children to discover what they can do on their own.

Before the first day, encourage your child to practice a few age-appropriate skills, like:

  • Washing and drying their hands
  • Putting toys away after playing
  • Opening their lunchbox or snack containers
  • Putting on their shoes or backpack
  • Asking an adult for help when they need it

They don't have to master everything before preschool begins. That's part of what they'll be learning!

Celebrate their efforts, even when things take a little longer.

Sometimes a simple "Look what you did all by yourself!" can make a big difference in building confidence.

4. Read Books About Starting Preschool

Books are a wonderful way to help children understand new experiences.

Look for stories about starting school, making friends, meeting teachers, and saying goodbye to parents.

As you read together, ask questions like:

"What do you think this little boy is feeling?"

"What would you be excited to do at preschool?"

"What could you do if you missed Mommy or Daddy?"

These conversations give children a chance to talk about their feelings and understand that being excited and nervous at the same time is perfectly normal.

5. Make Goodbyes Short, Sweet, and Positive

This might be the hardest tip of all!

When it's time to say goodbye, give your child a big hug, remind them you'll be back, and keep your goodbye routine simple.

You might say:

"I love you! You're going to have a great day. I'll see you after school!"

It's tempting to stay a little longer if your child gets upset, but long, drawn-out goodbyes can sometimes make the transition harder.

Instead, create a consistent goodbye routine that your child can count on.

A hug, a kiss, a high five, and a cheerful goodbye can go a long way.

And remember, some children walk right into the classroom on day one, while others need a little more time to adjust. Every child is different.

6. Expect Big Feelings After School

Here's something parents don't always expect.

Your child might have a wonderful day at preschool and still come home a little emotional, tired, or extra clingy.

That's because learning new routines, meeting new people, and navigating a busy classroom can take a lot of energy!

Give your child time to unwind after school.

Maybe that means a quiet snack, some extra cuddles, or simply playing together without too many questions.

And instead of asking, "What did you do today?" try something more specific:

  • "What made you laugh today?"
  • "Did you play with anyone new?"
  • "What was your favorite thing you played with?"
  • "Did you sing any songs today?"

You might be surprised by the little stories they share!

7. Give Your Child Time to Adjust

Some children settle into preschool right away. Others need a few days or even a few weeks to feel completely comfortable.

Both are normal.

There may be mornings filled with excitement and others when your child would rather stay home in their pajamas.

Be patient, stay consistent, and keep communicating with your child's teachers.

The goal isn't for every day to be perfect. It's for your child to gradually build trust, confidence, and a sense of belonging in their new environment.

And before you know it, that little one who once held tightly to your hand at drop-off might be running into the classroom to see their friends!
