Learning Through Play: Why the Little Moments Matter

A happy toddler in a green tank top shows his red-paint-covered hand beside his handprint painting.

If you've ever asked your child what they did at school today, you've probably heard the famous response...

"I played!"

And while that might not sound like much, there's actually a whole lot of learning happening behind that little answer!

At Tadpole Prep, we believe some of the biggest learning moments happen during the simplest activities. Building a tower of blocks, splashing in a sensory bin, painting with little fingers, or playing pretend with friends might look like ordinary childhood fun.

But to a growing child, these experiences are anything but ordinary.

They're learning how to solve problems, communicate, express themselves, build friendships, and discover how the world works.

And the best part? They're having fun while doing it!

Play Is How Little Learners Learn

Young children don't learn the same way older students do. They learn by touching, moving, exploring, experimenting, and experiencing the world around them.

Think about a toddler stacking blocks.

They aren't just building a tower. They're learning about balance, shapes, spatial awareness, and cause and effect.

When that tower comes crashing down (and we all know it will!), they're also learning how to handle frustration, try again, and solve problems.

Or picture a group of preschoolers playing restaurant.

One child is taking orders, another is pretending to cook, and someone else is serving imaginary food.

They're practicing communication, cooperation, creativity, counting, and social skills without even realizing it.

That's the magic of learning through play.

A Curriculum That Makes Learning an Adventure

While we love giving children the freedom to explore and discover, we also believe in creating intentional learning experiences that support their development.

Tadpole Prep's Preschool program for children ages 3–5 uses Experience Preschool, previously known as Mother Goose Time, from Experience Early Learning.

Experience Early Learning describes a play-based curriculum that brings learning to life through engaging themes, hands-on activities, music, art, stories, and opportunities for discovery.

Explore our Preschool program

Instead of simply memorizing information, children are encouraged to explore ideas, ask questions, make connections, and learn by doing.

Throughout their learning experiences, children have opportunities to develop skills in areas such as:

Six Areas of Development

These areas connect with the hands-on preschool learning described by Experience Early Learning.

Language & Literacy
Building vocabulary, listening to stories, recognizing letters, and developing early communication skills.
Math & Reasoning
Exploring numbers, shapes, patterns, sorting, and problem-solving.
Science & Discovery
Asking questions, observing changes, exploring nature, and discovering how things work.
Creative Arts
Expressing ideas through painting, music, movement, and imaginative play.
Social & Emotional Development
Learning to share, cooperate, express feelings, and build positive relationships.
Physical Development
Strengthening coordination, balance, fine motor skills, and gross motor skills.

Experience Early Learning describes the curriculum as a foundation for hands-on preschool learning. Families can ask our team how it is used in the Preschool classroom.

Because childhood should be full of discovery, not just worksheets.

Those Messy Little Moments Have a Purpose

We know that sometimes children come home with paint on their fingers, a little dirt on their shoes, or glitter in places you didn't even know glitter could go!

But those messy moments often come with some pretty big learning opportunities.

Sensory Play Builds Growing Brains

Whether children are washing pumpkins, scooping colorful rice, exploring water, or squishing playdough, sensory activities help them explore textures, strengthen coordination, and develop problem-solving skills.

They're also learning to focus, experiment, and make discoveries through their senses.

Art Encourages Creativity and Confidence

When children paint, color, glue, and create, they're doing more than making something cute for the refrigerator.

They're strengthening the small muscles in their hands, practicing coordination, making decisions, and learning to express themselves.

And sometimes the most important part isn't what the finished project looks like.

It's the excitement on their faces when they proudly say, "Look what I made!"

Music and Movement Support Development

Those silly songs, dance parties, and fingerplays are doing more than getting the wiggles out.

Music and movement help children develop rhythm, memory, listening skills, coordination, and language.

Plus, there's something pretty wonderful about watching a classroom full of little learners dancing like nobody's watching!

Pretend Play Builds Real-Life Skills

Playing house, running a pretend grocery store, or caring for baby dolls helps children make sense of the world around them.

They're practicing empathy, communication, cooperation, and creativity.

These experiences also help children learn how to express emotions, work through disagreements, and build friendships.

Every Child Learns at Their Own Pace

One of the most important things to remember about early childhood development is that every child is different.

Some children are eager to jump into every activity. Others prefer to watch for a little while before joining in.

Some love art projects. Others would rather spend their time building, exploring outside, or listening to stories.

And that's okay!

At Tadpole Prep, we believe learning should encourage children to grow in confidence while respecting their individual personalities, interests, and developmental needs.

Our teachers create opportunities for children to explore new skills, celebrate their progress, and discover what they're capable of.

Because those little victories deserve to be celebrated!

More Than ABCs and 123s

Of course, learning letters, numbers, colors, and shapes is important.

But early childhood education is about so much more than academic skills.

It's about the toddler who finally learns to put on their own shoes.

The preschooler who invites a new friend to play.

The little one who tries something new even though they're a little nervous.

The child who learns that making a mistake is simply another opportunity to try again.

These moments help build independence, resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

And those are skills children will carry with them long after they leave preschool.

Little Moments. Big Futures.

At Tadpole Prep, we see the learning happening in the everyday moments.

We see it in the excitement of a new discovery, the pride of accomplishing something independently, and the friendships forming in our classrooms.

Through purposeful play and caring relationships, children have opportunities to explore, discover, and grow. In our Preschool program, Experience Preschool (formerly Mother Goose Time) is part of that approach.

Our St. Augustine early learning center welcomes children ages 6 weeks through 5 years, providing a warm, engaging environment where childhood is celebrated and learning happens every day.

So the next time your child comes home and tells you, "I just played today," remember...

They probably learned a whole lot more than they realize!
